Midwife led care arrives
Midwife-led care was launched at St Mary’s Hospital on 1 November which means that it is now possible for women to have their whole pregnancy and labour cared for by a midwife.

Following confirmation of pregnancy, women will continue to see their GP. They will then be seen at home by their Community Midwife to see if they fulfil the criteria for Midwife-led care. If they are suitable they will have all ante-natal care carried out by their GP and the Community Midwife.

When appropriate the midwife can arrange for the expectant mum to be seen by a Consultant Obstetrician.

Midwife-led care is in place in most areas of the country and follows recommendations from the ENB and various government reports, including “Changing Childbirth”.

Midwife Led Care will enable women and their families to get to know their team of midwives well. Continuity of care has been proven to have real benefits during pregnancy. The midwives on the Island already feel that they are in the fortunate position of getting to know their Mums – this will further enhance the service we are able to provide together with our GP and Consultant colleagues.
