The Finance Department of the Island’s Healthcare NHS Trust have won a National Award - the Jon Havelock award for 2001. The topic for the award was 'championing development in turbulent times', and the award was won by FAST (Financial Advice & Support Team) for the multi-disciplinary finance team that was developed to train and support non-finance managers in the Trust and make improvements to systems and processes. All Trusts, Health Authorities and Primary Care Trusts were invited to submit a 1500 word paper by the end of November 2001 for judging by the Chairman of the Department of Health Finance Staff Strategy Group. The first prize of £2,000 which is awarded for finance staff development, is shared with Birmingham Heartland's & Solihull NHS Trust. FAST consists of Jo Blackley (Senior Management Accountant), Carl Hooper (Chief Buyer), Maria Lane (Financial Accountant), Mathew Leek (Charitable Funds Accountant), Jane Medley (Assistant Director of Finance) and Jacqui Pierce (Manager, Accounts Payable & Receivable). There will be an article in the HFMA (Healthcare Financial Management Association) Magazine, and the Chairman of the HFMA will be coming to the Isle of Wight sometime in April to present the award. The winning project will be published on the Department of Health website in the future. Graham Elderfield, Chief Executive, said “We were delighted to hear that members of our staff have received national recognition. It is a great morale booster and demonstrates the quality of work and calibre of the workforce here on the Island.”
