Peripheral Dexa Presentation
On Thursday, 6 March St Mary’s Hospital will receive a Peripheral DEXA machine (pDXA), presented by Proctor and Gamble and Aventis Pharmaceuticals.

The equipment will enable assessment of bone density at a peripheral site – the forearm – to assist diagnosis of osteoporosis in older patients, and serves to support planned development within the Osteoporosis Service.

This initiative is part of the “National Service Framework for Older People” introduced recently by the Department of Health in an effort to reduce both morbidity and mortality from falls and accidents in this vulnerable population.

The equipment will be used mainly within a new clinic for the elderly, provided by Dr Dirk Weich, Consultant Geriatrician, aimed at investigating in detail the reasons why the elderly have accidents and falls, with the objective of reducing subsequent fractures.
