Visiting Patients at St Mary's Hospital and at other NHS facilities on the Isle of Wight

Visiting times at St Mary's Hospital are 2-3pm and 7-8pm.

The list below provides information about visiting times at St Mary's Hospital and confirms the ward policy on flowers as this varies from ward to ward. Information is also provided about the Mental Health and Learning Disabilities units at St Mary's and in other locations on the Island.

Visitors are an important part of the day for many patients and we recognise that relatives and visitors can play a key role in helping someone's recovery. However to ensure that the experience of visiting is enjoyable for everyone we ask that visitors follow the simple recommendations outlined below:

  • Ideally we only allow two visitors at the bedside at any one time, but recognise that there may be times when more are appropriate.
  • Please do not sit on the beds. Chairs for visitors are available on all wards, please return them to the storage place after use.
  • If you have had a cold, stomach upset or have been unwell with an infection, we would encourage you not to visit unless it is absolutely essential. If you have had a stomach upset, please refrain from visiting for 72 hours after your symptoms have resolved.
  • Visitors from the mainland and elderly visitors travelling to St Mary's may be allowed to visit outside of the times identified below, but this is at the discretion of the Nurse in Charge of the ward. Ideally telephone the ward in advance by calling 01983 524081 and asking the hospital switchboard to connect you to the relevant ward. The condition of patients can change therefore on arrival please check again with the Nurse in Charge that it is still acceptable for you to visit. If you are travelling from the mainland it may be appropriate to double check with the Ward before you board the Ferry, Fastcat or Hovercraft. Please remember patients may not be on the ward due to tests or investigations being undertaken in other departments of the hospital.
  • As an alternative to flowers the shop run by the Friends in the Main Entrance at St. Mary's Hospital sells a number of gifts and items which might be suitable for the patient you are visiting. The majority of patients also have access to a bedside entertainment and telephone system for which prepaid cards can be obtained from dispensers around the hospital.
