2010 National Cancer Patient Experience Survey Click here to download:
Patients at St. Mary’s Hospital have rated their experience of cancer services as part of a national survey. The 2010 National Cancer Patient Experience Survey questioned patients from 158 hospital Trusts across the country between May and October 2010. 70% (88 people) responded to the local survey which asked cancer patients to rate the overall care they received at St. Mary’s Hospital as well as about the care they received from medical and nursing staff and their cancer clinical nurse specialist, who acts as the key contact for cancer patients. NHS Isle of Wight scored within the top 20% of Trusts surveyed for 20 out of 59 scored questions. The role of the Clinical Nurse Specialists received top marks in all questions relating to their role and the support given to patients. Other areas rated highly include privacy when being examined and treated, explanation of diagnostic tests and results, the quality of written information given about the operation, information given to the family on discharge and the level of information given about care and treatment. Areas which missed the top 20% bracket by just one point include the patient completely understanding the explanation of what was wrong, definitely involved in decisions about which treatment, doctors knowing enough about how to treat their cancer, enough emotional support given by hospital staff and GP Practice staff did everything they could to support the patient. |
