New initiative to provide more coordinated care for patients

The Trust has launched a new initiative with care homes on the Isle of Wight to provide more joined-up care for patients who are transferred to hospital.  ‘Red Bag’ is an initiative designed to ensure a single patient record is shared between the Trust and care homes and is being piloted with 18 care homes across the island. The pilot is due to finish in May and will then be reviewed before rolling out more widely.

Are you CPR ready?

Over 30,000 people suffer cardiac arrests outside of hospital in the UK every year. Did you know that in the event of an out of hospital cardiac arrest, a person’s chance of survival is less than 5%? If CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) is given and a defibrillator reaches them within the first 3 minutes then their chance of survival can go up to as much as 74%.

Following a spike in referrals to the Emergency Department at St. Mary’s Hospital were aware that a number of cases of diarrhoea and vomiting are circulating again in the community.  Diarrhoea and vomiting (D&V) is highly contagious.    Anyone who has had symptoms is asked not to visit the hospital, other health care facilities or other places where people are vulnerable e.g. residential care and nursing homes

Breast screening saves lives say Island NHS Trust staff

About one in eight women in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. There's a good chance of recovery if it's detected in its early stages. Breast screening aims to find breast cancers early. It uses an X-ray test called a mammogram that can spot cancers when they are too small to see or feel.

New technology will improve parking at St. Mary’s

Working with the Trust’s new parking and security contractor, APCOA Parking UK Ltd, Isle of Wight NHS Trust will be implementing an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system and new parking payment machines on the St. Mary’s Hospital site during the autumn.

Our intentions are that patients in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight will benefit from more health and care services being provided closer to or in their homes over the next five years.  They will have more choice about when and where to receive treatment, less travelling time to attend appointments and less time waiting for appointments, diagnostic tests and test results.

Cases of diarrhoea and vomiting in the community

Isle of Wight NHS Trust is aware that a number of cases of diarrhoea and vomiting are circulating in the community.  Diarrhoea and vomiting (D&V) is highly contagious.    Anyone who has had symptoms is asked not to visit the hospital, other health care facilities or other places where people are vulnerable e.g. residential care and nursing homes.

Funding awarded to Trust to improve emergency and urgent care services for patients

Emergency and Urgent Care Services at St. Mary’s Hospital, Newport, Isle of Wight are to be remodelled with money provided by the Department of Health.   The Department has announced that the Isle of Wight NHS Trust is among 19 hospitals across England who have been awarded a share of £13.34m   The £714,000 awarded to the Trust is to help support NHS England’s wider plans to improve A&E performance in England by 2018.

Ambulance Staff Recognised for over 600 Years Long Service and Good Conduct

Ambulance staff past and present, with a collective record of over 600 years’ service to the NHS, were recognised in a ceremony at Lakeside Hotel, Wootton Bridge on Thursday 20th July 2017.  The Lord Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight Lord Lieutenant Maj Gen Martin White CB CBE JP, along with Isle of Wight NHS Trust Interim Chief Executive Officer Maggie Oldham, presented the awards.

Thousands raised by local fundraiser for Island Cancer Care

A local resident from Lake has raised a staggering £32,185 for St Mary’s Hospital Cancer Care service following a 16-month long fundraising campaign.  The money which exceeded all targets will now be able to fund a new ultrasound scanner and vein finder to help in the care of cancer patients across the Island.

Successful ‘Take Steps’ Day

Breathe Easy Isle of Wight held a very successful ‘Take Steps’ Day on Wednesday 14th June as part of Breathe Easy Week and raised £250 for the British Lung Foundation after walking the equivalent of 68 miles. As part of their special day the Breathe Easy Group also presented Cheques to the Respiratory Department.

Changes to walk-in services at St. Mary’s Hospital

With effect from 3rd July 2017 it will no longer be possible to see a GP at the Urgent Care Service — formerly known as the Beacon Centre —between 8am and 6.30pm on weekdays. On weekdays between 8am and 6.30pm people should make an appointment with their GP practice, and GP practices are putting measures in place to make it easier.

CQC rate NHS 111 service as ‘Good’

Isle of Wight NHS Trust has welcomed the latest ratings from the Care Quality Commission. The Trust’s NHS 111 service, part of the Island’s innovative integrated care hub, has been rated ‘Good’. The ‘walk-in’ element of the Urgent Care Services has been rated ‘requires improvement’.   The CQC inspected the services in March 2017.
