Isle of Wight Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology, Victor Lawrence, has been recognised for his support to staff in training.

Dr Lawrence supports Podiatry students (the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases of the human foot) in the diabetes foot ulcer clinic at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Alan Borthwick and Mark Cole, lecturers at the University of Southampton presented Dr Lawrence with a citation as a mark of acknowledgement and gratitude for the support he gives the students from the University.   The students fed back their appreciation of Dr Lawrence’s input to their learning and the time he spends with them which they have all valued highly.

Head of Podiatry at Isle of Wight NHS Trust, David Shields said: “Dr Lawrence has been a tremendous source of inspiration and support for podiatry students. He has taken the time and made the effort to ensure that the students get good experience when they are undertaking their clinical learning sessions here on the Island.   Podiatry plays an important part in the treatment of diabetes. Early recognition of problems in the feet of diabetics and treatment can prevent amputation.”

The Podiatry Department provides an island wide service for people with mobility problems and/or at risk of amputation due to a medical need e.g. diabetes. The team provide assessment, treatment (including advice), review and discharge for all patients who are referred to them. This assists in maintaining mobility; identifying those people at risk of amputation, and preventing loss of mobility, and amputation, and helping them to maintain their independence. Patients are assessed and treated in community clinics, GP practices and at St. Mary’s hospital.
