Quality Care - everyone, everytime

Trust Statement
17 February 2017

Following the Health and Adult Social Care Scrutiny Committee meeting on 13th February 2017, Alan Sheward, Executive Director of Nursing and Quality at Isle of Wight NHS Trust, said:

“We won’t speculate what may or may not be the final report following the inspection of our services by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in November 2016.  Our staff across the Trust are striving to address the issues raised with us by the CQC.  The CQC returned to discuss progress with us on 18th & 19th of January 2017 and told us that they were assured by what was being done for mental health inpatient services but wanted to see more progress in mental health community services.

“Regrettably some of the issues in community mental health services reflect the difficulties in recruiting qualified staff to the Island in areas where there are national shortages.  Thus it is difficult to make progress as quickly as we would like.  We have developed a clear plan for improving Community Mental Health services and will work with colleagues in primary care and voluntary sector to maximise the care our Mental Health patients require and we are working closely with neighbouring mental health NHS Trusts and they are supporting us through their clinical leadership.  In addition, we are also working with the an ‘outstanding’ mental health NHS Trust - Northumberland Tyne and Weir - and  a trust that has recently been inspected and rated as good (north east London).  The latter are providing a team of experts, headed up by a Psychiatrist, to help us to make more rapid improvements. We also continue to communicate with the CQC about the work to ensure our improvement plans answer their concerns.”

“We are not waiting for the final report before starting to make the required improvements. We have a clear commitment to deliver the best Mental Health Services on the Island. It is believed the actions we are taking now will address the concerns expressed by the CQC.”
