Further information about our service

Our Therapy Process

Below is our referral and intervention process. Every referral is screened to ensure that they meet the referral criteria and are appropriately placed on the waiting list. We may even contact you to gain further information. When a therapist has capacity, they will then pick up the referral and make the first appointment. The therapist will then complete the necessary assessments to identify your child’s goals and complete interventions to help your child to meet these goals. Once this has been met, the therapist will discharge your child from our service and the child can be re-referred at any time.

The Child Health Therapy Services, Occupational Therapy is located in the south block of St Mary’s Hospital and is fully wheelchair accessible. There is access to a disabled toilet with a baby changing facility. There are two clinic rooms (small and large) with height adjustable tables and a range of chairs. There is access to a hoist in the large clinic room.

Are staff trained to work with children with additional needs?

Paediatric Occupational Therapists within the NHS are registered with the Health Professions Council and have specialist knowledge and experience of child development and paediatric conditions/disabilities. Paediatric Occupational Therapists attend post-graduate specialist training courses in working with children to promote their development and independence in the occupations of childhood including everyday activities across the areas of self care, play/leisure and education.

Paediatric Occupational Therapists work closely with parents, teachers, teaching assistants, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, the early support team, and paediatricians.

Who can I contact for further information - e.g. If I want to discuss something about my child or young person?

The Children’s Occupational Therapy Service can be contacted by telephone on Tel: 01983 534520 option 1.  If we are unable to answer your call, callers are asked to leave their, name, the name of the child they are calling about, the name of the person they wish to speak to and their contact number. Calls are returned as soon as possible.

If parents/carers have any concerns regarding their child or the service they have received, they are encouraged to talk to the professional that is providing the care or treatment and share their concerns with them directly. They may also wish to speak to the Clinical Team Leader.

The Patient Experience Officers (PEO) may also be able to facilitate discussion between parties as they are available for advice, support and assistance. You can contact the Quality Team to be put in touch with a Patient Experience Officer. For more information and contact details please click here.
