Leaving Hospital

The Discharge Lounge is a comfortable, safe and relaxing environment for patients who have been discharged from wards or the Emergency Floor and are still awaiting medication, discharge documents or transport and is open between the hours of 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week.

Patients who are due to transfer to the Discharge Lounge will be notified by ward staff on either the day before their expected discharge date or on the day of discharge. Ward staff will also advise the patient’s carers and relatives that they can be collected from the Discharge Lounge, rather than the ward.

It is often quicker if you have a relative or friend who can collect you. Staff will inform your relatives/friends when you have been moved to the Discharge Lounge. Once you have everything you need for your discharge your relative/friend can collect you. Support with booking taxi’s can be provided in the Discharge Lounge if needed.

Only patients who have a medical need will be able to access the Patient Transport Service to leave the hospital. Once you have all of your medication and discharge documents the Patient Transport Service will be made aware that you are ready for collection. Please note collection times can vary subject to Ambulance availability.

The lounge staff will provide:

  • A relaxing environment with comfortable seating, television and magazines.
  • Hot meals, snacks and refreshments will be provided throughout the day.
  • Toilet facilities are available, and assistance can be provided for those who require it.

Discharge Lounge staff will continue to deliver the highest level of patient care and ensure that the final part of a patients stay at St Mary’s Hospital is a restful one. The Discharge Lounge is part of the patient discharge pathway, so patients should expect to be collected from the Discharge Lounge at the end of their stay.

How to find the Discharge Lounge:

The Discharge Lounge is based in the North Hospital. Enter the hospital via North Hosptial entrance and turn right down the ramp.

Take the first left you come to and continue to the end of the corridor, past the Bereavement Centre and Sexual Health services. Then take a slight right at the end and the Discharge Lounge will be in front of you.
