There are about 5000 titles in the library.  Through our health library network (SWIMS) we have access to many more.  Please ask us if you cannot find what you need.  The SWIMS catalogue can be searched for material held in the Oliveira Library, as well as in other healthcare libraries in the south and west. (Select location i01 to filter for just our local holdings). Electronic books can also be found via this catalogue. To request books from our own collection or elsewhere please email

Apart from Journal of Paramedic Practice, all our journals are now available electronically.  To view electronic journals usually requires an OpenAthens log-on. Eligible staff can apply for a password via the OpenAthens registration page. Accessing the full text of journal articles can be complicated and frustrating - please do no waste your time - for help finding references and sourcing journal articles email

Light reading

We hold a small collection of general fiction and non-fiction for leisure reading.  This is located in the Wellbeing Section of the Library.

Reading Well

We hold some books from the Reading Agency recommended 'Books on Prescription' and 'Mood boosting books'.  These are available for staff to borrow.  If you would like to recommend them to your patients please direct them to their local public library.  You can issue them with a book 'prescription'.  Links to the Prescription Forms are on the Health Savvy Pages > For Health Professionals tab.

The Well-Being section contains our Light reading and Reading Well collections as well as Self-help books, Short reads and a small Spiritual section.

To borrow our books you need to be a member. Sign up at the desk and get your SWIMS Library card - it’s free for NHS staff and students to join

Your SWIMS card is valid in over 50 NHS Libraries in the South West.
