Building work for the new community diagnostic centre at St Mary’s Hospital will start next month.

Following a successful bid, island-based contractors Mountjoy will begin work on Monday 7 August 2023 to build the new centre that will significantly expand diagnostic capacity on the island.

With faster access and earlier diagnosis, the new centre will help to improve outcomes for people with serious long term health conditions, such as cancer, stroke and cardiovascular disease. The building work is due to be completed by Summer 2024.

Chief Operating Officer and Director of Estates and Facilities, Joe Smyth said: “We are delighted to announce the beginning of building work for our new community diagnostic centre and look forward to welcoming Mountjoy on site next month.

“We are committed to investing and transforming health care services for our island community and ensuring they are sustainable for years to come. The centre as well as a new emergency care floor and improved intensive care unit and a new integrated community and mental health hub in Newport High Street, will mean islanders will continue to be able to access the very best care.”

Duncan O’Rourke, Mountjoy Building Projects Director said: “We are delighted to have been selected to work with the Isle of Wight NHS Trust to deliver this vital new facility for the benefit of Isle of Wight community.

“We are excited about getting underway with the works and look forward to delivering a project that all parties involved will be proud of.”

More information about our Investing in Our Future programme can be found on our dedicated website. While we know building work can be disruptive for patients and visitors we will always work to ensure this is kept to a minimum.
