Examples of outstanding practice highlighted in End of Life Care services
04 September 2019

End of Life Care services at St. Mary’s Hospital have been rated ‘Good’.

This follows a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) where examples of outstanding practice were noted by the inspection team.

The Isle of Wight NHS Trust provides End of Life Care to patients across all clinical areas who have different conditions including cancer, stroke, cardiac and respiratory disease and dementia.

End of Life Care includes aspects of essential nursing care, specialist palliative care, bereavement support and mortuary services.

During the inspection the CQC looked at End of Life Care for adults and visited various wards at St Mary’s Hospital where patients received End of Life Care.

The Trust planned and provided services in a way that met the needs of local people.

Staff cared for patients with compassion and kindness and their dignity was respected and maintained. Staff were passionate about their vision and the improvements they wanted to make to benefit patients, their care and support.

The CQC noted that the quality and safety of the services provided were assessed, monitored and improved and that training was structured and only staff that had completed their competencies could use equipment.

Shane Moody, Clinical Director for End of Life Care and Consultant Nurse, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be rated a Good service.

“Over the past 10 months we have worked incredibly hard to improve the way we care for people at the end of their life and the introduction of the integrated palliative and end of life care team has been achieved through excellent partnership working with Mountbatten.

“This rating is testament to all our staff and their commitment and passion to improve and provide the very best care for patients and their loved ones at such a sensitive time.”

Liz Arnold, Director of Nursing at Mountbatten, said: "Congratulations to the Isle of Wight NHS Trust in achieving this acknowledgement of the work being done to make improvements in end of life care. At Mountbatten, we believe that anyone experiencing death, dying and bereavement deserves the very highest quality of care, wherever they receive that care. We will continue to work with our partners at St Mary's to ensure that we are there for patients and their families when they need us most."
