New Academic Skills Suite officially opened

A new Clinical Academic Skills Suite has been officially opened at St. Mary’s Hospital.

The facility will benefit clinical staff working across the Isle of Wight NHS Trust including doctors, nurses and allied health professionals, offering a dedicated area for a variety of skills training, creating a better learning experience for all staff.  

The Academic Skills Suite will be used for practical training such as clinical simulation. Simulation education bridges the gap between classroom learning and real-life clinical experiences; replicating a real-life environment for teaching and experimentation. The suite will also be used for scenario based teaching and is equipped with high fidelity simulation manikins which are used for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.

The new suite is a welcomed addition to the Education Centre which provides training to around 3,000 NHS employees every year. The facility is dedicated in memory of Allison Harries, former Education Centre Manager. Allison became Medical Education Manager in 2007 after starting work for the Trust in 1982 and it was Allison’s vision to create a dedicated space for staff to learn vital practical skills.

Maria Lynch, Director of Medical Education, said: “This suite will enable us to improve multi-professional training and development and clinical simulation.  The huge benefits will be realised right across our Trust and help drive up the quality of patient care. Allison would be delighted with the Academic Skills Suite and we are very proud of her and her legacy.”

The Academic Skills Suite was officially opened by the Island’s High Sheriff, Geoff Underwood on Friday 19th July and celebrated by staff.  

A plaque dedicated to Allison Harries was placed alongside a tree outside the Education Centre by Allison’s family.
