Surprise graduation for Pharmacy students

Pharmacy Team with Harrison and AshleyWS
Surprise graduation for Pharmacy students
12 August 2020

Two students at St. Mary’s Hospital still managed to celebrate their graduation against all the odds thanks to their pharmacy colleagues.

Ashley Wilson and Harrison Spary, two pre-registration trainee pharmacy technicians, were due to attend their graduation in July. However, due to COVID-19, Highbury College were unable to hold their normal ceremony.

So, determined not to let their achievements go uncelebrated, the pharmacy team organised a mini in-house graduation for them which was kept completely under raps until the day.

Angela Ghent, Senior Pharmacy Technician and Dispensary Manager said: "Ashley and Harrison have done so well in achieving Distinctions throughout their whole BTEC L3 programme at Highbury College alongside their NVQ L3 with Bradford College.

“They managed to complete and qualify in July despite major disruptions to the programme since the Coronavirus affected course delivery and their professionalism and commitment to the department and our Trust has been outstanding throughout so our wonderful Pharmacy team brought the celebrations to them.”

The team organised a socially distant ceremony in the department complete with cap and gowns for Ashley and Harrison to wear with speeches and cake and the weather didn’t let them down!

Ashley said: “After working so hard for two years it was really disappointing that our Highbury graduation would not go ahead due to Coronavirus. I was completely shocked by what the team had arranged for us and that they managed to keep it such a big secret. Our surprise mini graduation is something I will never forget and was a brilliant way to get the whole team together to celebrate something really positive."

Harrison was also bowled over by what the team had organised, he said: “I would like to thank Angela and the whole pharmacy team, including those who stopped by on their day off, for arranging a day that I too will never forget. It was lovely to have the graduation, which came as a complete shock! I am really proud and happy to continue as a member of a brilliant team.”

Harrison and Ashley have recently completed their 2 year training programme and will register with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) as qualified pharmacy technicians.
