The Gastroenterology team at St. Mary's Hospital provides a wide range of Gastroenterology services for both inpatients and outpatients.
Gastroenterology is the service which looks after patients with gastrointestinal disease which can include disease of any part of the digestive tract and also areas of the liver, biliary tract and pancreas.
Gastroenterological conditions range from acute life threatening illnesses such as liver failure or gastrointestinal haemorrhage, through serious chronic conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and liver disease to non life threatening problems such as functional bowel syndromes. The speciality is also involved in the diagnosis and treatment of various cancers and with public health issues relating to chronic and excess alcohol use.

The Gastroenterology team based at St Mary’s hospital has two Consultant gastroenterologists and a Specialist Inflammatory Bowel Disease Nurse. They are supported by registrars from theWessexdeanery gastroenterology training programme, nurse endoscopists and an Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Nurse Specialist.
