The Community Dental Service will continue to provide high quality dental care to patients who live on the Isle of Wight and who meet the specific criteria listed below. The service promotes good oral health and prevents and treats dental disease.

We can provide orthodontic treatment through a referral, domiciliary services for those people who are house bound and an emergency dental service at weekends/public holidays. Please note this is not a walk-in service. All cases are triaged by telephoning 111 prior to an appointment being given.

The following criteria for eligibility (below) varies between clinic locations.

  • Physical/mobility problems e.g. housebound/wheelchair bound
  • Learning disabilities
  • Complex medical history where condition or medication compromises oral health
  • Complex medical history where condition/medication necessitates special care prior to/during/post dental treatment e.g. poorly controlled epilepsy, poorly controlled diabetics, cystic fibrosis
  • Management problems/challenging behaviour (details required on the form e.g. autism, ADHD)
  • Children with complex needs
  • Children with specific dental problems
  • Phobics
  • Mental Health problems

The community dental teams consist of a number of specialised roles:

  • Dentists
  • Dental Nurses
  • Specialist Dental Nurses
  • Dental Therapists
  • Specialists in Orthodontics and Special Needs / Care
