Laidlaw is an outpatient unit caring for patients who require diagnosis and rehabilitation covering many of the disease specialties and services.
Patients may be asked to attend for a review appointment with their designated clinician or attend for investigations. Some patients attend for one episode related to a health problem which is then completely resolved, but for other patients who are diagnosed with a long term condition, attending a clinic at Laidlaw might become an integral part of managing their condition.
A comprehensive assessment is undertaken of all patients needs and a care plan is agreed which provides treatment and support. There are strong links with staff working in the community and within the hospital setting and some health professionals based at Laidlaw will work with patients within all three settings within the scope of their role.
Care is delivered by consultants, doctors and their teams which include clinical nurse specialists in a range of specialities; specialist therapists in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychology and speech and language therapy, therapy assistants, orthotics and prosthetics technicians, registered nurses and health care assistants supported by receptionist and administration staff.
Carers needs are also assessed and addressed. The unit offers information and educational material for patients and carers to self select. Clinicians provide supplementary specialised information to patients and carers. Clinical Nurse Specialists also provide telephone advice and support to patients, carers and other health and social care professionals.
The unit is located on the St. Mary's Hospital site adjacent to the B&Q roundabout and is a single storey building with easy access for mobility impaired patients and visitors. The waiting areas are bright and spacious with seating of various types to suit most patients needs. A small café and shop is present in the lounge area which sells drinks, food and gifts to patients, carers and staff. A conservatory provides a less formal area for patients and staff to sit. Also a patio area and garden is available for use.
