The Chronic Pain Team

The Isle of Wight Chronic Pain Service is a multidisciplinary team made up of several different healthcare professionals.

  • Doctors and Nurses aim to reduce pain intensity and control any underlying causes, if known. They assess patients, establish treatment plans, advise and educate patients about their condition, prescribe and review medicines and perform injections and/or acupuncture meant to relieve pain.
  • Physiotherapists treat musculoskeletal conditions causing or being the result of pain. The goal usually is to maintain or improve mobility of joints and strengthen weakened muscles and improve confidence with movement.
  • Clinical Psychologists assess the impact pain is having on your life overall. This can include mood, relationships, thoughts, work and leisure. They can provide self-management and coping techniques/strategies that aim to reduce the impact pain is having on everyday life.

When your GP refers you to the IOW Chronic Pain Service you will be invited to attend an assessment appointment. For more information on this please see the ‘Assessment Process’ page.
