We are a small unit which provides holistic patient centred care tailored to the needs of your child and their family. We comprise of a thirteen bedded ward, a six bedded Children’s day ward, Children’s outpatients and Children’s Community Nurses.
We cater for all of paediatrics from 2 weeks old through to 18 years. We look after a wide range of paediatric medical and mental health problems, orthopaedics and surgery. All of our nursing staff are specially trained in looking after sick children and we have a range of other staff including nursery nurses, housekeepers, a play specialist, a paediatric diabetic nurse specialist and children’s community nurses.
We have daily Medical Consultant ward rounds, where children are reviewed and treatment plans clarified. Orthopaedic and Surgical patients are also reviewed on a regular basis by staff from those disciplines. Children’s day surgery such as dental, ear, nose and throat (ENT) procedures and minor operations are carried out on a daily basis from our Children’s day ward. We run a successful pre-surgery ‘Saturday Club’ where children booked for routine day surgery are pre-assessed and introduced to the ward and some members of staff prior to their operation. This gives them a chance to experience hospital in a non-threatening manner and also for to ask questions about their care. Parents are also encouraged to ask about any issues they may have concerns over.
Children’s Outpatients is situated next door to the Children’s Ward and we have daily clinics where consultants see patients booked into clinic. Referrals are either made by the GP via letter or Choose and Book.
A parent is encouraged to stay with their child whilst in hospital. We have a dedicated play room for entertaining your child whilst in hospital and an adult-only parent’s room for adults to have some free time. Please feel free to ask one of the doctors or one of the nursing staff anything about your child’s care whilst in hospital.
Our Children’s Community Nurses work closely with the Children’s Ward to ensure care is carried out seamlessly between the ward and the community. They also care for many chronic long term paediatric patients in their own home environment, preventing many frequent hospital admissions and easing some of the burden of chronic childhood illnesses.
We also work closely with the paediatric departments at University Hospital Southampton to enhance the level of care that your child receives, utilising some of their services that we are unable to provide on the Island. We are a designated Level 1 Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit and can also offer care to visitors to the Island with oncological problems.
If your child has the need to use any of our services, now or in the future, we look forward to meeting you and your family. Car parking costs can be reduced whilst your child is in hospital – please ask the nursing staff for further details.
