Isle of Wight NHS Trust is urging people to take precautions and stay well during the current hot weather, with temperatures forecast to reach highs of 30C over the coming days.
The warmer weather is expected to continue across the Isle of Wight and Hampshire over this bank holiday weekend and into next week.
While the hot weather is likely to be welcomed by some, it can cause some to become unwell through dehydration, sun burn, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. The UK Health Security Agency has issued an Amber Heat Health Alert, running until 5pm on 27 May indicating significant impacts are likely across health and social care services.
Dr Natalie Borman, Chief Medical Officer at Isle of Wight NHS Trust, said: “Hot weather can increase the risk of serious conditions with older people, babies, young children and those with existing health conditions being particularly vulnerable in the heat.
“We encourage everyone to stay well, by drinking plenty of water, using sunscreen and limiting alcohol.”
“We advise staying out of the sun during the hottest part of the day - typically between 11am and 3pm - and where possible carrying out planned physical activity or exercise in the morning or evening when it is usually cooler.”
If you feel unwell over the next few days and are not sure when to seek support, please contact NHS 111 online or by phone. You can also get non-emergency help from your pharmacy or urgent treatment centre. Please keep the Emergency Department free for people who need life-saving care.
Pharmacy opening times may vary this weekend due to the bank holiday. Check your local pharmacy opening times.
