Patients and visitors with non-visible disabilities are being supported through the launch of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower scheme, which launches today (Monday 27 April 2026) at St Mary's Hospital.

The Sunflower is a globally recognised initiative that helps people discreetly indicate they may need additional support, understanding or time. Non-visible disabilities can include a wide range of conditions, such as autism, dementia, mental health conditions, or chronic pain, which may not be immediately apparent to others.

Those who wish to can wear a Sunflower lanyard or badge during their visit. This signals to staff that they may benefit from extra assistance or reasonable adjustments.

Colleagues at the hospital are being encouraged to recognise the Sunflower symbol and respond with patience, understanding and appropriate support.

Vanessa Flower, Head of Experience of Care, said: "We want everyone who comes to our Trust to feel supported and understood. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower scheme is a simple way for you to let our staff know that you may have a hidden disability and could need a little extra help or patience. By wearing the Sunflower, you’re helping us to support you better during your visit."

Sunflower lanyards and badges are available from the PALS office in the main reception area at St Mary’s Hospital.
