People are being urged to use healthcare services wisely after Isle of Wight NHS Trust reported exceptionally high demand in its Emergency Department at St Mary’s Hospital.
Attendances at the department increased by over 20% in the past week, putting considerable strain on the Trust. A number of these attendances were for minor ailments such as sunburn that did not require emergency care.
Joe Smyth, Chief Officer at Isle of Wight NHS Trust, said: “The Emergency Department is here for people with serious conditions that need advanced medical support. If you need this care, we would encourage you to attend. However, minor illnesses and injuries can be treated in other locations, such as your local pharmacy or GP surgery.
"We are asking local people to help us ease the pressures on our hospital this week by choosing the right NHS service for their needs. Using services such as pharmacies, GP practices and NHS 111 where appropriate will help ensure our Emergency Department remains available for people with serious and life-threatening conditions."
You can help the NHS by:
- Getting advice early: If you need medical advice, please speak to your pharmacist or GP, or use NHS 111. They can often provide the support and guidance you need without a visit to the Emergency Department.
- Checking on family, friends and neighbours: Please support relatives, friends and neighbours who may need extra help. A simple phone call or visit can make a real difference and may prevent health concerns from becoming more serious.
- Collecting relatives promptly: If a friend or relative is ready to leave hospital, collecting them as soon as possible helps free up beds for other patients who need care.
- Helping patients return home safely: When relatives or friends are discharged from hospital, you can support their recovery by helping them settle back at home. This includes ensuring they have food and essential supplies available.
These simple actions can make a real difference and help ensure our emergency services are available for those who need them most.
