What is an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are a great opportunity to learn the knowledge and skills required to work within the NHS at the same time as earning a wage. Apprenticeship opportunities may be in clinical or non-clinical areas.

An apprentice may be a newly recruited member of staff, or an existing member of staff undertaking an apprenticeship to further develop in their chosen career.

Who are our apprenticeships for?

Apprenticeships are for everyone. There are often myths about apprenticeships being for individuals who are school leavers, but this is just that, a myth. Apprenticeships can be undertaken by anyone, and we offer training at all levels and in a variety of sectors across our Trust, including business and administration, finance, nursing, healthcare science and much more.

How do I apply for an apprenticeship?

If you don’t currently work for us, then you can apply for available apprenticeship positions by visiting our current vacancies or NHS Jobs. All our apprenticeship roles will include ‘apprentice’ within the role title.

Since 2018, Isle of Wight NHS Trust has supported more than 120 nursing apprentices, providing an accessible and flexible route into nursing for people within our local community. We are proud to continue offering the Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship (RNDA) in partnership with our university providers.

Overview

Registered Nurses play a crucial role within multidisciplinary teams, working collaboratively to meet the health and care needs of patients and service users.

The RNDA is a 4-year programme that combines paid employment with academic study, supporting apprentices to become Registered Nurses. Apprentices work within multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, compassionate and evidence-based care while developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for professional nursing practice.

Throughout the programme, apprentices learn to assess, plan, deliver and evaluate patient care, placing patients and their families at the centre of everything they do. Practice is guided by Isle of Wight NHS Trust values and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards.

Programme Elements

Apprentices divide their time between:

Working as a Healthcare Support Worker within their designated clinical area
Undertaking supervised clinical placements across a range of acute settings
Completing academic study activities

A variety of clinical placements will be undertaken in combination with a diverse academic programme of study, balancing theory and practice. During supernumerary practice whilst on clinical placements, apprentices are supported by trained supervisors and assessors who act as role models for safe and effective care.

Support

Apprentices receive dedicated support throughout the programme, including:

Academic and pastoral support from university tutors
Regular university tutorials and progress reviews
Guidance from the Trust's on-site Professional and Clinical Education Teams
Supervision from trained practice supervisors and assessors during placements

Completion

Successful apprentices will achieve a Level 6 Bachelor of Science (BSc) Degree in Adult Nursing and be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and Registered Nurse positions.

Essential Qualifications

Level 2 English and Maths (GCSE Grade 4/C or above, or Functional Skills Level 2).
A Level 3 qualification in a science, healthcare or social care subject, or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant experience.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to interact professionally with patients, carers, relatives and colleagues
Commitment to the Trust Values: Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Everyone Counts
Aged 18 or over at the start of the apprenticeship
