The Oliveira Library was originally opened by Mr. D. A. R. Naylor, B.E.M and chairman of the Isle of Wight Health Authority on 8th December 1984, in memory of Mr A. B. Oliveira who was a consultant surgeon working at St Mary's Hospital.
Mr Anthony Oliveira, who was originally from Argentina, was a very highly thought of and likeable person at St Mary’s. But very tragically, he passed away in 1983 when awaiting a routine procedure in hospital. In his memory, all the doctors and consultants on the Isle of Wight donated money to open the Oliveira Library in his name.
